I don't know if you have checked out the food blog, smittenkitchen.com, it's become one of my favorites. I like the photography she takes and can tell she tries out the recipes a few times with good insights into why and why it didn't work.
I've made these apple cheddar scones a few times and LOVE them! The cheddar cheese gives them a nice subtle nutty flavor and the apples give it the sweetness that isn't over powering. http://smittenkitchen.com/2010/10/apple-and-cheddar-scones/
